Policies regarding user-run experiments and training

Access rules

Use of the NMR Facility at the Department of Chemistry, McGill University is available to McGill and to external academic and industrial users, subject to the following guidelines:

1) Users who have undergone NMR training by the facility staff may operate the instruments without direct supervision.
2) Individuals who have not undergone training and checkout may submit samples to be run by Facility staff at service rates (see the Service page for more information).
3) Financial responsibility for damages: NMR users are responsible for damages that results from either the negligent use of the spectrometers or samples that are explosive, pressurized, chemically corrosive, radioactive, biologically dangerous, or that otherwise pose unusual hazards to instrumentation or personnel. In all such cases, prior permission and advice should be sought with regard to these special samples, but permission does not absolve any user from responsibility for whatever harm their samples any cause the Facility.

Training request

You are encouraged not to request training until you plan to actively use the NMR instruments for research. You may not use the spectrometers until you have been trained.

Thanks! We'll get in touch with you within one week. If you do not hear from us within the week, email Robin Stein.

Reserving instrument time

The liquids instruments without autosamplers can be reserved at FACES (our group is MCGILLNMR). Facility maintenance and service have the highest priority among all other activities. All users must observe the sign up rules. Click each of the following instruments to read the sign up rules.

Varian VNMRS500

Varian Mercury 400

Bruker AV400

The solid-state NMR instrument can be reserved at FACES using group MCGILLSOLIDS.

NOTE: The computers in the Facility do NOT serve as data storage devices. It is the users' responsibility to backup their data. The Facility personnel will retain the right to delete any data residing in the hard disk without issuing warnings. Data may be backed up directly onto USB drives.
